Black Lives Matter: React Router Docs Are Offline
- JPKab 6y agoHmmmmmmmmmmm. What happened to Mr. Floyd is a tragedy. This just comes off poorly though, no matter how well-intentioned. Understood that you want to show the world you care. This just seems small, pointless, and unsubstantial. Why not have a button that solicits donations instead of crippling functionality that somebody expects to be there?
- shuntress 6y agoBecause crippling functionality that you expect to be there.might get you to actually pay attention.
- thu2111 6y agoWhy? The vast majority of people don't live in the USA, don't have any influence over it and just want to get on with their job. Or would you like it if a whole bunch of websites you relied on started disappearing because of some political fight in the EU.
- monadic2 6y agoThe idea is to get YOU to care.
- JPKab 6y agoIt's condescending to assume I don't care already. This makes the maintainer feel better and that's it. Pure theater. A donation to an anti police brutality legal fund would actually accomplish something. End qualified immunity. Lemmings and their moral posturing.....
- kerng 6y agoBecause it inconveniences and reaches people that otherwise are not impacted or avoid getting involved. Documentation is still available on Github - so really just a very little minor inconvenience.
- siquick 6y agoThis is great. Respect.
- ponker 6y agoI don’t really see how taking docs offline helps anyone either functionally or symbolically.
- EdwardDiego 6y agoMy thoughts exactly.
- knaik94 6y agoIt calls attention to the issue.
- _-david-_ 6y agoPretty sure they can just put a header or modal when you load the page.
- EdwardDiego 6y agoI'd say we're all fairly well aware of it though.
- ponker 6y agoDoes it? I would say it more draws attention to React Router.
- shard972 6y agoA good reason not to use react anymore if this how professionals act.
- kn0where 6y agoThe docs are still readable on Github, fyi.
- monadic2 6y agoYes, a great reminder we in tech can have material responses as well!
- webel0 6y agoI think that this is a nice gesture. For those who are puzzled, I think that they’re just trying to help us to keep our work and programming in perspective by providing a reminder where we might not expect it. If you really need to read the docs you can do it on github. Think of it as a PSA, maybe.
- olivermarks 6y agoSo I can read the documents on github but not on the website at the moment where instead money is being soliciting to match $10,000 in React donations to Black Lives Matter, The Equal Justice Initiative, and NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund. Why now when there are so many examples of heavy handed policing in the USA all the time? - monadic2 6y agoGeorge Floyd is an instance of a very, very difficult video to watch. Even when you’ve been desensitized to watching people be violently subdued under seemingly peaceful conditions, the absolute lack of humanity of his actions is undeniable. There are also other events that happened last week: the murder of Breonna Taylor by plain clothes cops in a no-knock raid where her boyfriend called the cops that murdered her to report “someone just broke in and shot my girlfriend”. Then Ahmad Arbery, who was shot by an ex-cop and his son in a “citizens arrest” gone wrong in a style reminiscent of Jim-crow era lynching. All of this happened in a week, under a blatantly white supremacist presidency, during a pandemic with 25% unemployment where you might have gotten a $1200 stimulus check, after the populist, anti-racist candidate was shoved out the primary by another president who did nothing (that worked) after protests of police brutality. The rage is palpable. Edit: spelling
- michaelmior 6y agoThis actually happened across several months, but much of it did become public within a very short period of time. Breonna Taylor was shot near the end of February, Ahmaud Arbery a few weeks later, and George Floyd was murdered around 2.5 months following that. Unfortunately these sorts of events happen far too often and don't always gain the widespread attention they should in a timely manner.
- olivermarks 6y agoWithout negating either of these two comments I do think it is alarming the degree to which the US corporate media are capricious in their coverage of these types of incidents. As the link I posted claimed, there are currently thousands of 'news' stories about the unfortunate Floyd's demise but little over time of many other similar incidents regardless of race, situation etc. This massive inconsistency leads me to suspect perhaps there is a coverage agenda here, whipping an already massively stressed population into a state of rage and anxiety, and giving black bloc and other bad actors the media coverage they crave during this era of soft and muzzled martial law. Raising money for organizations that may be a remedy could be a good idea but could also further inflame a media whipped up holocaust
- mrburton 6y agoWhy would this be a good thing? Why not leave the docs up to help further educate people, but put a banner on top of the site to show respect like Hacker News does? You can call attention more so by reserving a nice area of at the top of the page and logo while still encouraging people to come and learn. Now people will just go there and leave. I can't see how this would get people to care or care more? Just my opinion.
- siquick 6y agoBecause educating people on racism and police brutality is far more important than educating someone on a navigation library.
- mrburton 6y agoOkay, I expected to see such answers on social media and not on Hacker News. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Thanks for your thoughtful answer.
- cthaeh 6y agoYeah but i dont live in america and so dont give 2 shits. Its wasting my time. Also the docs on github are old, deprecated aka useless. I"ll never use react router again if I cant help it.
- shard972 6y agoAll i learned is that liberals view anyone who disagrees with their interpretation of race at any given time is racist.
- _-david-_ 6y agoMy biggest issue with this is the assumption that racism is involved. Two of the officers involved are not white and the only "evidence" I have seen that Chauvin is racist is a picture of another person. https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/make-whites-great-again-hat/ https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/make-whites-great-again-ha...
- k__ 6y agoFlagged? Com'on!
- monadic2 6y agoPolitical posts are only allowed if they can be construed as interesting to venture capital.
- aiscapehumanity 6y agocockSec or cuckSec, what ever these authoritarians that keep flagging BLM are alive and well.
- woofster 6y agoSoydev at its finest
- monadic2 6y agoThis is how you know someone doesn’t have a spine.
