I especially liked this alternate model: http://kennethsnelson.net/PortraitOfAnAtom.pdf http://kennethsnelson.net/PortraitOfAnAtom.pdf I don't know if anyone had ever bothered to develop it further, or even critique it, but it's interesting how many qualitative phenomena it explains in a straightforward, intuitive way!
