Do you have an alternative idea? It seems to me that the only way to maintain quality and at least a little bit of objectivity is to charge a flat fee. Charging for use (including advertising) drives individual writers and sections to via for the most eyeballs and clicks. Charging a flat fee requires the entire newspaper to improve. Also, it won't be long before all the news fit to read is behind some sort of paywall (or something similar), unless drastic change takes place.
