Yes it was, and that was shameful and wrong. It was also a century and a half ago. Sixty years back or so, the Democratic party literally split in half over exactly this issue, with the Dixiecrat demographic leaving to find its own path (I'll let you guess where). The party of modern civil rights legislation is absolutely the democrats. People who want to talk about antebellum history instead of actual policy choices are just trying to obscure the truth instead of discuss it.
