Were they totally terrified throught their lives because of it? I don't think so. It's all a matter of perspective. I personally try to accept that my life will end, the ending will likely be agonizing and nasty, and it can happen at any moment. I don't know a lot about meditation, but I think some strains of meditation schools tend to focus a lot on this fact, with daily contemplation of decaying bodies etc. It's an ancient tradition which may actually contain a lot of wisdom.
