Ask HN: Are indie game devs happy with Apple Arcade 6 months after its launch?
Hola HN,
As someone looking to create a mobile game (for iOS and iPadOS, not macOS), I'm curious if any of you have (or know someone who has) been down this path with Apple Arcade. For consumers, Arcade is a $5/month subscription to access a catalog of games, none of which can sell In-App-Purchases.
It seems like the tradeoff involves getting better distribution/marketing via Arcade at the expense of the freemium model option. Big publishers may also get some kind of advance/exclusive package, but I doubt small indies do?
I've developed for Mac before (homepage: www.currentkey.com) (using both IAPs and pay up front models at various times), but that experience doesn't really inform me well for this mobile game domain.
Any insights would be super helpful, thanks!
