I like hating on Amazon as much as the next guy but if you hire 175,000 people some of them will get COVID-19 and die just by chance. Is there any evidence to suggest that Amazon workers are actually more likely to die than people that don't work at Amazon?
- Exmoor 6y agoThe article cites the figure of 7 Amazon worker deaths as of 5/20. No idea if that's accurate, but we can come back to that. As of 5/20 the USA, population 330,000,000 had ~93,000 COVID-19 deaths. If we take a guess that Amazon, who has ~1 million worldwide employees, from the most recent numbers I can find, has 500,000 employees in the USA then we can do a simple comparison. 5 / 500,000 = 0.000014 93,000 / 330,000,000 = 0.000282 0.000282 / 0.000014 = 20.14 So, according the publicly available numbers, as of a week ago the average US Amazon employee was 1/20th as likely to have died of COVID-19 as the average US resident. Now, you might argue that perhaps Amazon is covering up some numbers in hopes of looking good, but they'd have to be covering up 134 deaths to even get to parity with the general population.
