Actually I just switched this year to a job for a big data start up, I had no working experience with big data so far. I completely agree with you, you should do what you love to do. A lot of experience will only make switching easier, as long as you keep an open mind. This will eventually show in some job interview and it will get you a job, whether you are young or old.
