Microsoft did open source 1983's DOS: https://github.com/Microsoft/MS-DOS https://github.com/Microsoft/MS-DOS Given they've only made it to DOS 2.0 so far, it might take them a while to open source Windows 95, but it no longer seems like an impossibility either.
