Ask HN: Is there an eng role that identifies product opportunities?
I'm looking to define a role within my company that would involve applying architect-level knowledge of our systems to uncover opportunities for product enhancements.
Basically: "Team A developed this solution for Problem A, and Team B developed this solution for Problem B, but if we took this part of Team A's work and this part of Team B's work, we could come up with a useful new product. Let's build a prototype!"
The architect-level roles I'm familiar with seem to be more systems-focused and less product-focused than what I'm envisioning. But positions like technical project manager seem too far into product/project management land, with little ability to get one's hands dirty in the code.
Do you know of any roles or titles that seem to fit what I'm describing? It would be nice if I could say that yes, this sort of role exists at other companies.
