The comments here are a wonderful insight into the SV and HN mindset. Developers want to develop.
Take the classic unicorn triad of finance/sales/development, and make a plan to exit as close to the peak of the revenue curve as possible. After all, the instantaneous value of peak income at the inflection point is pretty high. If all goes well (and it almost never does), you could be earning billion of dollars per second, at least if you ignore the burn rate.
It turns out that some 99% of the money to be made is under the curve between the initial peak and the end of the long tail -- and the end is not yet in sight for many mainframe applications. They're busy earning billions of dollars a year.
- draw_down 6y agoIt isn’t a well represented set here, but plenty of people would be happy to take somewhat more modest wages to keep the thing humming while it prints those billions. Just don’t ask them to significantly alter it
- p_l 6y agoFunnily enough at $DAYJOB we use data from some mainframe systems. Recently the team learnt that no, those mainframes are not on-premises, they are in IBM cloud.
