Best movies of 2020 would be "pay 0.10 for #100-90 and then .10 for each #90-#80 etc". Stratechery would be "pay 0.10 for the above the fold part and then 0.10 for the rest". Authors used to get paid in micropayments (by the word or books were serialized) so we don't have to guess about the effects. Victorian authors (whose works were all published serialized) stretched things out to the point where modern readers often find them unbearably long.
