I've dealt with refactoring UIs designed by Python junkies from Academia, and tend to believe that's where the tools in movies come from. They aren't consumer products in the movie, they're hacked together open source projects (Or VB UIs to trace hackers!). Heck, last time I served on a jury the prosecutor used VLC to demo videos instead of media player or other consumer level products.
