NY is roughly a third of the US cases alone with NYC being the majority within that. While there are many many affected places, that's the one in the worst shape. (The Seattle area had some bad spots in nursing home early on but has since improved significantly.)
But that said, NYC never closed the subway and up until last week were only cleaning the cars every three days. Now they do it every night. The governor required nursing homes to take covid-positive patients despite knowing that old people were the worst hit. When the lockdowns first began, most people treated it as a long weekend and went to bars, restaurants, etc.
While we have evidence that sunlight, hot temperatures, and physical distance all either kill the virus or reduce risk overall, the NYC subway system in March and April is the opposite in all ways.
