You're not alone. And yes, cleaning up counts as a side project. Deep focus is really difficult. Without a checklist it's hard to get anything done, and there are a number of interruptions. As for learning / focus - typically that happens after they're in bed, and the time gets eaten from sleep, but I haven't been able to dig into anything deeper than a Raspberry Pi tinkering project.
