All caps = less credible
"BeyondNuclear.org" I'm not familiar, but it's possible they are using this tradegy to push an agenda.
- astrodust 16y agoHow about a nuclear reactor technology that doesn't require active cooling to be safe? That'd be a better solution.
- johngalt 16y agoOk, but you have to be careful about "better solutions". I am not a nuclear engineer but passively cooled nukes are only solving one rare problem. A power generating station has a lot of moving parts, I'm sure there are other risks that passive cooling doesn't solve. Other trade offs in efficiency and total output may eat up any safety advantage. You haven't helped anyone if your reactor is twice as safe but you have to build twice as many. This is akin to seeing one engine fire because a radiator failed, then demanding that all vehicles should be air cooled for safety.
- penguat 16y agoThey are doing exactly that - if you read a little further it becomes clear. (example "harrowing evacuation": http://www.beyondnuclear.org/home/2011/3/11/troops-dispatched-to-japan-reactor-site-american-workers-the.html http://www.beyondnuclear.org/home/2011/3/11/troops-dispatche... ) Not to mention their tagline: "Working for a world free from nuclear power and nuclear weapons"
- johngalt 16y agoIt would be hard to make their case if they didn't point to nuclear accidents, but I consider timing and tone to poor in this instance. Normally, I'd agree with the second half of their tagline. Nuclear weapons are terrible things, but any tiny bit of support is withdrawn with articles like this one.
