I've bought a handful of ordinary things (bookshelves, a t-shirt, tire chains, coffee and pastries) with bitcoin, just for the heck of it. These are real-world things I would have spent other kinds of money on if I couldn't pay with bitcoin. I used bitcoin for its novelty. Bitcoin itself is obviously unsuitable to replace cash (or banks, etc) in general, but I've been fascinated by cryptocurrencies since the David Chaum days, so I like to play with it. Speculating on it is more effort than it's worth, to me. My USD$25 in bitcoin holdings did require me to check a box on my tax forms this year, though...
