A little over a month ago, I wrote about how COIVD-19 was two diseases, the one caused by the virus and the other caused by society eating itself in an attempt to fight the virus:

I did a follow up called This Is Not a time of Honor, but it doesn't cover a lot of things that are starting to come out right now: the sheer number of people who had serious medical conditions who avoided hospitals or were told simply to not come in. There are several anecdotal stories of people who have died from heart attacks and other diseases, and those need to be measured because that should have never fucking happened.
So much of what has been done to stop this disease has had determinable effects. We try to say Lives > Economy, but the economy isn't just some abstract concept; it is what allows so many of us to live. Our leaders locked everyone down without providing a god damn thing to help people (at least in the US, at least in the UK and other country, they got payroll ... PPP in the US is a god damn joke).
I also fear that the push for contract tracing will basically erode all our privacy, or what's left of it anyway.
- hackeraccount 6y agoIronically the way COVID strikes the body seems like the way it hits society. When you get COVID physically there's an initial attack by the virus that could potentially hurt you - but after you're body has fought it off there's an overreaction by the immune system that's a dangerous as the virus. In the same way the initial cases of COVID can kill people - but the response; the lockdown for example can damage the economy to a degree that people can also be killed.
