I'm just about as socialist as they come, but I'm dropping you downvote. Yes, this move is clearly precipitated by capitalism, yes, capitalism sucks.
But I think we do everyone better by trying to put some effort into posting about why it sucks, and how it specifically seems to be impacting this situation. Low effort posts aren't going to change anything, and they clutter up HN.
E.g. Intel's primary motivation is to increase their capital, they have relatively fixed material costs and somewhat flexible labor costs, and so they choose to expend their labor (in this case by putting them in a risky environment) to continue to increase their capital.
- OrgNet 6y agothanks for proving my point, most people just don't want to see it (also, downvotes don't matter as much as you think)
- lidHanteyk 6y agoOr, you could zoom out and look at a pattern: Intel's failure to care for the safety of their employees is analogous to their failure to care for the safety of their customers, in the sense of Meltdown and Spectre. In both cases, upper management prioritizes the bottom line and reinforcing the status quo, despite the fact that the world fundamentally changed and thus their practices should change too.
