Crappy code abounds, and yes, the authors seem to be grinding an axe. That notwithstanding, a reputable scientist, seeing that this code was being used to make decisions that would directly affect millions of people in a life-and-death way, would stand up and proclaim, "This is just a fucking prototype and not to be used for important policy decisions." Not doing so is pretty unethical. (Far more so than breaking quarantine for a little nookie...)
