Well...yeah. That's the whole point of deniable operations: when they go to hell, you can pretend they were the work of some rogue operators. Every time one of these goes sideways, the US government tries to wash its hands of the instigators. Doesn't mean we need to be credulous enough to believe them, or the media outlets they use to launder those claims. It's absolutely legitimate to look at the CIA's body of work in South America and then roll your eyes and laugh when they try whistle innocently and stroll away from an attempted coup against a left-wing South American leader involving ex-special forces.
