I felt liked the Metro design which felt hip, new, and modern when first coming across while developing an app for a windows phone back around 2013. But they lost the phone os battle to iOS and Android.

Knocking together basic data entry mobile apps was within the range of anyone who can do advanced Excel. This might be of questionable value to "real" developers but the business value of this type of power is immense and gets things done that would be unaffordable to do today.
