I found the sourcehut page really hard to look at because there's no sense of visual hierarchy. Everything is at the same equal "level" for attention, so your eye just goes all over trying to find something to anchor to but it can't find it, so you feel overwhelmed. Good page design should lead you to certain actions and organize the content into some sort of hierarchy.
