Is there a way to do unlinked forks? Or is it impractical to obfuscate code?

  Yes, you can just upload it as an independent repository, just don't hit the fork button.

    They'll come after you anyways if they care. When Apple's iBoot code was put up they presumably scoured GitHub to find unlinked forks because those disappeared soon afterwards.

      Never said they wouldn't, just you can fork/clone/mirror without auto-cascading delete.
