If you can write C as well as the OpenBSD people, be my guest, keep writing C. It might take you like 20 years to get somewhere interesting.

- anthk 7y agoLike OpenSSH? PF? Clang? All of the modern compilers and languages made in C? Maybe you can create something more widespread in Rust and not being a single part of a browser.
- pjmlp 7y agoClang is written in C++. The large majority of modern compilers and languages are either bootstraped or written in a mix of the language itself and C++.
- adamnemecek 7y agoAnd it took them forever to get anywhere. Compare LLVM with cranelift. Cranelift made so much progress very quickly.
- pjmlp 7y agoIndeed, but lets be honest about the optimizing capabilities and supported hardware architectures of Cranelift.
- yjftsjthsd-h 7y ago> It might take you like 20 years to get somewhere interesting. Perhaps it did, but they started 25 years ago. (Much like the bit, "staying closed-source set back clones by weeks or months... years ago".)
- adamnemecek 7y agoYou are right, but they will be outpaced by more productive languages.
