The moment after I signed the contract to join a startup, the CTO said "OK, then... Here's your laptop, install Windows and we'll talk later..".
My heart sank and felt I took a bad turn in life. I really wanted to work there but I had stopped using Windows for health reasons a long time ago. I wondered if it were rude to resign the same day because there was no way I would use Windows. I thought it was more honest, but at the same time I thought I may be too radical. Maybe I could be spared and still work there. My brain went into overdrive. The CTO then said "Uh, I mean Linux.", he noticed my face and continued "Don't panic, there are no Windows machines here". The whole thing lasted a few seconds.. I heaved a sigh of relief.
We try to be brutally honest with applicants, not only with the hardware but on the specifics of the job. It disappoints many who imagine they'll be doing "data science/AI" with screens that blink and computers that beep.
- Adisuki 7y ago> I had stopped using Windows for health reasons a long time ago. How does Windows cause health issues?
- saagarjha 7y agoMaybe they can’t use it because of health issues that cause them to need special accessibility tools that are unavailable on the platform.
- Maledictus 7y agoHigh blood pressure.
- Jugurtha 7y agoThis. I had also become violent towards my machines, punching and kicking them several feet up.
- giantDinosaur 7y agoWhy did you punish the machines for the software? :( Edit: Ah, I see, you removed the violent rage towards machines running windows part.
- Jugurtha 7y agoI was young and immature and started doing that after I tried everything. I was also stuck with a "faulty" RAM which I couldn't replace that I thought was causing this. That situation occurred often enough and right when I really didn't want it to happen - like saving work - that it became irritating.
- FartyMcFarter 7y agoThis sounds like a mostly separate issue which you should get help for. Operating systems, by themselves, do not cause people to kick things.
- dunefox 7y agoThey absolutely do. I could not develop on windows without anger management classes.
- FartyMcFarter 7y agoTo be a bit clearer: I get that operating systems can be very annoying, but kicking things is not a healthy reaction to being annoyed. If you kick things just because you're irritated, please seek professional help, and don't blame it all on Windows.
- Jugurtha 7y ago>How does Windows cause health issues? It is not that Windows caused health issues, but my reaction to Windows was not healthy. Bear in mind that before switching, I had only used DOS but mainly Windows for almost two decades. Let's say we grew apart over the years.
- maheart 7y agoYou're exposed to more viruses.
- searchableguy 7y agoI feel like people didn't understand sarcasm or I have a broken sarcasm detector. I can't tell.
- Jugurtha 7y agoThere is no sarcasm; this was a real situation.
