My only advice on which router to get is don't be cheap by buying the cheapest one at $ELECTRONIC_STORE.
I bought a sub-$100 cable modem + wifi router and used it for like 5 years. It was good enough for most things, but it could easily make it choke when doing big uploads (e.g. uploading a few gigabytes of pictures from smart phone, syncing Dropbox, streaming a video file to my Chromecast) via wifi. The wired connection was 10x-20x faster.
I eventually bought a nice-ish gaming wifi router and my upload speed immediately jumped to wired speeds. It turned out I just had crappy wifi on the cheapo wifi/router.
