I switched to my own router and modem last year with Comcast, and it was shockingly easy to get the old router returned and the fee removed on monthly bills going forward. I haven't seen it come back since. I was previously paying $7/month for it. I was able to go drop off the old equipment I was renting at one of those physical Comcast support centers, though. I wonder if that has anything to do with it?
