Perhaps it would be a good idea for the readers of HN to try and collaboratively design a VCS survey, and then distribute it among the general developer populace (in the hope of gaining a large sample). A quick google indicates http://www.surveypirate.com/ http://www.surveypirate.com/ as a tool which would allow large numbers of responses for free, or perhaps google documents. First step would be some questions though. EDIT: The OP has been updated to solicit responses from anyone visiting the page, which is pretty much what I was hoping for with this comment.
