This is why you need something like a price on carbon emissions to actually fix global warming. Who can keep track of all these factors creating emissions? Price signals propagating through the economy could fix this, whereas a programmers optimising their JS frameworks and runtime performance to account for their carbon emissions will never happen.
- adrianN 6y agoReducing carbon emissions is one of the main motivating factors why I enjoy speeding up code. So it happens, but maybe not often enough.

- tonyedgecombe 6y agoGood luck getting a global consensus on taxing carbon.
- rnestler 6y agoWell there is an ongoing attempt with the Kyoto Protocol (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyoto_Protocol https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyoto_Protocol)
- golemiprague 6y agoFirst fix corona, you can't even model a virus that happening right now correctly but somehow know that you need to fix and how to fix some future maybe problem which might or might not happen. I'd rather have software than start throwing money down the pit to "solve" global warming. When global warming will actually cause issues to some area in the world we will deal with it, until then let people live their life. I just cringe of the thought what would have happened to the economy if we wasted this money on "green new deals" right before the corona crisis. The hubris of the scientific community assuming they can predict the future in such a complicated system is just amazing.
