Why bother with Leo? Jus build one on the moon (along w a moon base) The interferometry would be awesome when coordinated w a telescope in the atacama. And no worries about maintaining a spacecraft, no shuttle missions, no astronaut exposure to radiation. Compare the rate limiting factors of working on the ISS versus doing the same thing in the Atacama. Having a safe, protected environment with gravity allows a much more human friendly working situation. Space is for transiting, not living in. We need to be on planets.
- BurningFrog 6y ago"Just build a moon base" might be overly optimistic :)
- rbanffy 6y agoTo say nothing about radiation shielding on the Lunar surface.
- nordsieck 6y ago> To say nothing about radiation shielding on the Lunar surface. Compared to space, radiation shielding on the moon is trivial - humans belong underground except for short stints on the surface.
- gameshot911 6y agoSpeaking of a moon telescope....[1] [1] https://www.nasa.gov/directorates/spacetech/niac/2020_Phase_I_Phase_II/lunar_crater_radio_telescope/ https://www.nasa.gov/directorates/spacetech/niac/2020_Phase_...
- blackrock 6y agoI would think, that we would first need to land on the moon again.
- bawana 6y agoWe should take turns. US, China, Japan, Russia, India, EU, even North Korea. Did I leave anyone out who has launch capability? How about those nations who dont have launch capability- They can buy a seat on SpaceX, BlueOrigin, or Virgin Space (or whatever that guy's company is called). And I'm sure there are a few private companies I've forgotten. I bet those astronauts who make it through training, make the journey, and survive the rigors of life on the moon will have a lot of camraderie, respect for each other and human decency. Why? Because evil is not tolerated in an environment where your actions can lead to the loss of your nation's citizens and its investment as well. When you have skin in a game where everyone is watching, you play fair. or else.
