A press conference does not come at the expense of doing concrete things. It has a purpose. One of those purposes is to keep people's spirits up with hopeful news about things that are being tried, to show that all angles are being pursued, etc. You can argue all you want that you know better how to do a press conference as a sitting president of the USA, but it's absurd to fault him for giving medical advice. He didn't.
You might as well condemn all newspapers, websites, or newscasters, and commenters the moment they start talking about potential new areas of research or treatment.
The reason the media got all pissy about it is because the President started doing what they consider to be their own proprietary job that nobody else can do: spreading rumors (aka "news").

- jtbayly 7y agoWell, there are reasons, but I can't think of good ones. But you do realize that's quite a different criticism, right? I'm just saying that the hypocritical hyperventilating about this is absurd.
