What's the point of supporting the current economic model if it doesn't support human welfare? What's the point of any of our abstractions if they don't serve human welfare? I'm totally in agreement with you. The pain of economic loss is processed in the emotional and reward centers of the brain. Empathy and compassion, on the other hand, are processed in advanced sections of the brain in the anterior prefrontal lobe. When we are encouraged to think about the stock market all the time, then the emotional centers are allowed to take over, and we forget that people are what's important.
