- jrs95 6y agohow many years ago was it that HN typically had a generous interpretation of comments? lmao

- redis_mlc 6y agoNo, I wasn't joking. Patients on ventilators have a reported mortality rate of 66% to 90% (NY is 80%.) And California has an extremely low corona mortality rate, with most of the population exposed to it since Dec. So it looks like the "science" HN'ers spout about spread and mortality is completely wrong.
- ScottFree 6y ago> Patients on ventilators have a reported mortality rate of 66% to 90% (NY is 80%.) reported where?
- p1necone 6y agoCorrelation does not prove causation. Only really serious cases end up on ventilators, of course the death rate of those serious cases is going to be higher than the average of all cases. (Assuming the statistics you're reporting aren't made up)
- clouddrover 6y ago> Patients on ventilators have a reported mortality rate of 66% to 90% (NY is 80%.) It would be 100% without the ventilators. They go on ventilators when they have to be on them and at that point the disease is severe and the prognosis is grim. In the US 45,000 people have died from COVID-19 so far, and that's with all the countermeasures and restrictions that have been put in place. That number is still going up. Yesterday saw the highest number of new confirmed cases in the US since testing began: https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/map.html https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/map.html https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/ https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/
- zamfi 6y ago> It would be 100% without the ventilators. They go on ventilators when they have to be on them This is not quite true. [0] Ventilators are one option at that stage of disease, and some doctors are moving away from them because of their negative effects. https://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2020/04/08/health/ap-us-med-virus-outbreak-ventilator-deaths.html https://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2020/04/08/health/ap-us-med...
- Reelin 6y agoWow, you certainly had me fooled - I thought it was obvious sarcasm (and fairly amusing at that). I think you should consider that patients aren't generally placed on ventilators until they are already nearly dead. Concluding that ventilators kill patients is similar to concluding that going to the hospital increases your risk of death. Correlation is not causation; significant covariance often occurs in the real world.

- sk5t 6y agoDitto, intubation is a pretty brutal course. Try to imagine suggesting that blood transfusions lead to low blood pressure.
- aegis4244 6y agoMark Twain wrote an essay about avoiding his bed, as many back then died in their own. http://www.twainquotes.com/Galaxy/187102d.html http://www.twainquotes.com/Galaxy/187102d.html
- lern_too_spel 6y ago> And California has an extremely low corona mortality rate, with most of the population exposed to it since Dec. Most Californians have not been exposed to it. Claiming otherwise is wishful thinking that doesn't fit the hospitalizations curve or the deaths curve.
- URSpider94 6y ago“Most of the population exposed”? Um, the (highly controversial) studies that have come out in the past few days calculate an exposure rate of around 3%. That’s hardly everyone in California, or even most. There’s also zero evidence that anyone was exposed in the USA before mid-January.
- etrabroline 6y ago>Patients on ventilators have a reported mortality rate of 66% In the unlikely event you aren't just trolling, this is because only extremely sick people are put on ventilators. The death rate for people with bad cases is higher when they don't have ventilation.
- anigbrowl 6y agoI was generous, assuming mere ineptitude rather than malice. The guidelines ask one to use the strongest plausible interpretation.
