For my setup I was running ESXi on a 2012 i7 Mac Mini with 16GB of RAM At the time I bought it (2013?) it was far better value for money than any of the Intel NUCs. I've always wanted someone to produce a NUC in a similar form factor, with good design but there doesn't seem much demand And alas the current Mac Mini's are completely un-upgradable
