Trump suspends all immigration to the US
- aprao 6y agoThere isn't any clarity on the order. Is it suspension of immigration visas or work visas or both? Anyone have any ideas?
- erentz 6y agoDear god. Reading the comments and tweets under that makes one thing clear. Twitter is toxic as all hell. Is there any way to do social networking that promotes healthy discourse and surfaces fact based information? Or are we doomed to this kind of thing everywhere being our future?
- vanniv 6y agoTwitter is amazingly toxic, and alas that toxicity escaped Twitter and has infected everyday life. Twitter toxin might actually be more deadly than the coronavirus in the long run
- zozbot234 6y agoWe like to call it "toxoplasma" around here. Because feeding that kind of toxicity just keeps it flowing in an endless cycle. No matter if it's a white cat or a black cat, the toxicity is the same.
- ShorsHammer 6y agoYou need to change people far more than the platform. Short emotional hottakes are incredibly effective compared to dry facts backed up with evidence.
- hindsightbias 6y agoTwitter is a perfect reflection of its users.
- serf 6y agoRight. It always kind of puzzles me when folks start nonchalantly talking about what kind of restrictions could be placed on speech in order to make it less toxic. Talk about a slippery slope. The reality is that social media is exactly as toxic as the crowd that runs any one splinter of it, and it's not by any means a cohesive whole. I think that there is some irony to a group of computer scientists looking at a social problem from a context of "What filters can I apply to this bad data in order to have a good output?". I think that it's (mostly) irresponsible, and damaging as a trend. Basically : service providers are in a conundrum where the product they sell appears to be discourse and speech, but due to human nature the 'product quality' dwindles, so the service provider treats the 'product' like any other, and iterates over it until it sells better. Shaping discourse and speech in an effort to 'sell better' as a social media 'product' is going to silence a lot of people, and is in no way free discourse. 'How it sells' is not a valid metric for the judgement of discourse, unless you're profiting -- and then that position puts your motivation towards purely free discourse into question.
- belltaco 6y agoTitle of the HN post is wrong, immigration hasn't been suspended yet.
