Basically, I think it's reasonable to give up if you don't enjoy working on the problem or can't find satisfaction in it. If externally motivated it's harder. Here you'll want to focus on techniques to force yourself to do things. Otherwise check in with yourself regularly about what you want and why you're doing things. If you get alignment with your work then things come easy.
