Check out the “Side Effects” section of that page. ECMO is brutal, and requires a very tight balance of anticoagulation to prevent clotting on one side and bleeding on the other. There are only a few hundred ECMO machines in the US. I suspect that’s less due to cost, and more due to the limited number of patients per year for whom ECMO has a good chance of being a net benefit.
