Instagram is the way it is, for instance, because even if what you want to post is a whinging paean to your ex, you have to figure out a photo to go with that in order to put it on your profile. Even if what you want to post is a text meme from Tumblr, you've got to screenshot it, and now other people can swipe that screenshot. The way people respond to restrictions on use creates new forms and modes of use; new platforms emulating old ones makes sense.
