The IMF is predicting the global economy will contract by 3% this year, which would be the worst since the great depression. However what made the Great Depression so painful was its depth, scope and length. The US experienced 4 straight years of negative growth in 1930s (up to -12%) and in many ways the economy did not fully recover until World War 2. So far I don't see anyone predicting a downturn of that size.
