I find that even in the workplace, amongst people who are not billionaires, there is a clear tendency for people to be utterly disinterested in technical work. Everyone has a reason for the things they do, and I don't think the answer is often: "Gosh, this is so interesting." To me, this translates into: "I want to invest in the amazing next big thing, but actually I am not interested in how to get to the amazing next big thing." So the billionaires are just the same as the ones who are not billionaires.
