- Justin_K 7y agoWhy does your paper have to be so one sided though? I live in LA and won't subscribe because your paper has always followed an agenda.

- donohoe 7y agoMy paper? I live in NYC. One sided? There is a quote (forget who) "Facts Have a Well-Known Liberal Bias". I'll leave it at that.
- kortilla 7y agoA quote by a liberal (Krugman) writing an opinion piece for the nytimes is hardly an argument. He even had to follow it up to specify that they had a center-left bias.
- jsjddbbwj 7y agoYes, you better leave it at that.
- dredmorbius 7y agoThat formulation comes from a Paul Krugman opinion piece from 2017: "Facts Have a Well-Known Liberal Bias" https://www.nytimes.com/2017/12/08/opinion/facts-have-a-well-known-liberal-bias.html https://www.nytimes.com/2017/12/08/opinion/facts-have-a-well... Krugman used the similar "The Facts Have A Well-Known Center-Left Bias" in 2016: https://web.archive.org/web/20160509144531/https://krugman.blogs.nytimes.com/2016/05/09/the-facts-have-a-well-known-center-left-bias/ https://web.archive.org/web/20160509144531/https://krugman.b... Stephen Colbert's 2006 Press Correspondents' Dinner roast used the line "reality has a well-known liberal bias" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_Colbert_at_the_2006_White_House_Correspondents%27_Dinner https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_Colbert_at_the_2006_Wh... https://invidio.us/watch?v=2X93u3anTco https://invidio.us/watch?v=2X93u3anTco Rob Corddry in 2004 gave the similar "facts themselves are biased" and "facts in Iraq have an anti-Bush agenda" on Jon Stewert's Daily Show: Corddry: How does one report the facts in an unbiased way when the facts themselves are biased? Stewart: I'm sorry, Rob, did you say the facts are biased? Corddry: That's right Jon. From the names of our fallen soldiers to the gradual withdrawal of our allies to the growing insurgency, it's become all too clear that facts in Iraq have an anti-Bush agenda. http://www.slapnose.com/archives/2004/05/04/the_liberal_bias_of_facts/ http://www.slapnose.com/archives/2004/05/04/the_liberal_bias...
- dredmorbius 7y agoAddenda: There's a ... related ... sentiment expressed by John Stuart Mill regarding conservatives, ~1865-68 https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/1486818-conservatives-are-not-necessarily-stupid-but-most-stupid-people-are https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/1486818-conservatives-are-n... I suspect the general notion goes back further. Einstein's "great spirits" quote also reflects a similar sentiment: https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/470750-great-spirits-have-always-encountered-opposition-from-mediocre-minds-the https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/470750-great-spirits-have-a... I'd be shocked if Voltaire didn't have a few related bon mots.
- oh_come_on 7y agoUnironically, why? It seems like trying to shave a yak - the model itself has been destroyed, leading to hysteria and misinformation. Consider how popular dreck like Breitbart is now, compared to high quality journalism like WaPo or the LA Times.
- uk_programmer 7y agoJournalists in general have been covering up stories where it not convenient for the narrative, have done hit coordinated hit pieces on members of the public and are generally a bunch of scumbags. No I won't ever be supporting these people.
- afiori 7y agoAs a supporting example you can look at how mainstream media is treating the (most recent) of sexual assault allegations moved against Biden[1]. [1] https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/12/us/politics/joe-biden-tara-reade-sexual-assault-complaint.html/ https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/12/us/politics/joe-biden-tar...
- Doctor_Fegg 7y agoProgrammers in general have been, and continue to be, responsible for a lot of equally egregious things. Careful with that axe, Eugene.
- uk_programmer 7y agoThis is pure whataboutery and I think it a pretty egregious act of deflection. There is always someone who thinks they have the `big-brain` and indulges in whataboutery. It has to be one of the worst sorts of mental masturbation out there. The news media generally (and this includes the LA Times) smear people by either omitting detail (lies by omission), taking things out of context, misrepresenting various sub-cultures in society (anything from metal music, video games, to internet sub-cultures), run coordinated hit pieces on members of the public. You can always go and point to somewhere else and say "there are bad things here". Okay so what? It not what we are currently discussing. I btw will call out any shitty behaviour by companies or individuals.
- TekMol 7y agoThat links me to a blank page with this text: While most of our pages are available in a version of latimes.com created for European Union users, some are currently unavailable. We are engaged on the issue and committed to identifying technical compliance solutions to this problem. Thanks for your interest in the Los Angeles Times.
