I hate when people compare Apple products specs with the other competitors.
I mean, if a device runs smooth including apps, and no crashes. Why the hell do I need to know if Xoom as 1GB and iPad2 has only 256mb ?
This will only shows that the iPad was better developed in terms of memory optimization then any another other >= 1GB device that does the exact same thing.
- Tichy 16y agoI suppose the article talks specs because in the keynote the specs of the competition were being dissed. Reap what you sow. Actually, the one spec that REALLY matters to me is resolution of the front facing camera. A smooth tablet is a nice gadget, but I really NEED a skype capable device for my mum, so that she can chat with her grandchildren. It seems the iPad 2 is actually losing out in that spec comparison.
- Someone 16y agoI do not know anything about the quality of either device's cameras, but I do know resolution is not the way to measure camera quality. That applies even more to measuring how Skype-capable a device is. For Skype on an iPad, one could even argue that any resolution over 1024 by 768 is overkill.
- Tichy 16y agoWhy should the resolution be overkill? Apple just put HD webcams into their new line of MacBook Pros. The other end of the chat might be on something else than an iPad. (Also I say Skype, but Facetime might be an option in some cases, too).
- thenduks 16y agoHonestly? That would have to be a really crappy camera if it wasn't good enough for basic video chatting. You wont even notice unless the resolution is lower than the resolution of the device (highly unlikely).
- Tichy 16y agoI read the camera is just VGA (640x480). My niece is on a MacBook, so I suppose her screen resolution is at least four times that.
- ars 16y agoHe's trying to say you won't be able to upload such a high resolution over your internet connection, so it doesn't matter. Even 640x480 is tough to stream real time from most people's home internet connection. You also have to compress it real time, which may not be possible at a higher resolution.
- Tichy 16y agoWhy did Apple put HD webcams into their new MacBooks, then? They seem to be more optimistic about the resolution that can be transmitted.
- ars 16y agoYou can use the camera to record, and then upload non-realtime. Like youtube for example.
- ars 16y agoYou can use the camera to record (and compress), and then upload non-realtime. Like youtube for example. A small tablet probably doesn't have the CPU power to compress an HD stream, but a laptop should.
- Tichy 16y agoThe Apple specs say specifically "FaceTime HD camera", which seems to suggest they believe transmission of HD chat videos is possible http://www.apple.com/macbookpro/specs.html http://www.apple.com/macbookpro/specs.html Also, who says I prefer framerates over picture quality? Perhaps a reduced framerate is the better tradeoff in exchange for high definition images.
