The idea of doing email in terms of identities is a good one. That is because doing any communication in terms of identities is a good one. That simplifies, email, IM, video/voice and, yes, even video conferences. What we need is a standard identity token that works with everything. Everything could still do their own identity stuff natively but could be automatically verified using the standard identity token. I have recently spent some time looking at how PGP does this sort of thing in the form of key fingerprints and how the public key stuff works.
