Wrote a program to manage the sale and rental of video tapes for an small business. I wrote it in 1984, using Turbo Pascal. The last time I checked the store was still running the same software in 2005.
The application was table driven, all important configuration items were stored in a text file as a key-value pair. It had a bar-code scanner and was tied into a cash drawer. Receipts were printed on small dot matrix printer.
It took about 4 weeks to write.
The best programming environment ever.
- roel_v 6y agoDidn't the software need to distinguish between vhs and dvd by the mid 90's?
- Mister_Snuggles 6y agoBack in the mid-80s it would have needed to distinguish between Betamax and VHS. Or it could be handled simply by listing "The Terminator (Beta)" and "The Terminator (VHS)" as separate titles.

- watertom 6y agoIt did. Like I said everything was table driven, with key value pairs. The owner opened up the text file, and added a new rental type, DVD. They also started renting VHS players, and DVD players, just added as new categories. If the sales tax ever changed, the owner could easily make that change as well. It had a built in rewards program, specials, sales, all editable in the text file. Once the software was delivered I never touched it again.
