I agree with you (to an extent) and was admittedly glossing over the costs - I'm just not convinced that market manipulation is going to be an effective way to prevent depressions. I'm not even convinced that anyone pulling these strings doesn't know this. Some of the costs that you describe, like folks being less willing to invest in and work on things that have proven themselves to be unprofitable, may actually be benefits.
