The problem I keep running into is that the more room for nuance and fit and holistic evaluation that you inject into a hiring process, the more room there is for interviewers to fill that space with their own biases toward hiring people like themselves. In that sense, the white board problems are pretty fair, even if they're (very) imperfect.
