I've not been able to get it to work smoothly without specifying at least a 1000ms buffer, which kinda ruins the ability to use as a real time communication too

  It seems to have massive delays if I capture on full resolution (3060x2295 on my phone), but that is a ridiculous number that can't even be transmitted over my internet, so I run it at 1280x720, which has basically ideal latency.
