I have an offer to join an engineering team at Apple, but the chances of getting hit by layoffs is giving me pause. More details on my situation are here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=22809769 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=22809769
- doingmyting 7y agoI don't work for Apple but they have 200 billion in cash on hand. I doubt you'd be at any lower risk of being laid off at any other company all else being equal
- sjg007 7y agoApple has a ton of cash. I think layoffs are unlikely. Many times new hires are protected as well for a bit.
- apple2019 7y agoDo you work for Apple? Might you have any insight into how the company decides how / who to layoff, when the time comes? I would have thought that the newest would be the most vulnerable, since they haven't had the time to absorb institutional knowledge and make internal connections.
- stormbrew 7y agoIS&S is not the same as IS&T. Totally different orgs.
- apple2019 7y agoHow does IS&S compare, relative to other orgs at the company? Does the org you work for (in contrast to your role or seniority level) matter, when it comes to job security? Thanks for your insights.
- saagarjha 7y agoIS&S is much more stable than IS&T, but you'll likely get light, unofficial disdain from software engineering because the organization has a reputation of working on some of the poorer-quality products at the moment. I have heard from the grapevine that Apple is hiring aggressively at the moment, and I wouldn't expect a layoff given that they're huge and fairly financially secure. Large corporations usually weather recessions fairly well. But I have no firsthand experience with your particular situation and I'm just a random person on the internet, so YMMV.
- Bahamut 7y agoApple didn't have mass layoffs when it was almost dead I have been told by engineers who were around at that time. I'd think Apple is one of the safest tech companies to be in as an engineer when it comes to times like this.
