Apple's AirPods Pro have a similar issue where a firmware update nerfed the noise-cancelling[1]. Apple stopped pushing the update, but I'm been stuck with this bad firmware for nearly four months now. The firmware updates are installed silently in the background while AirPods are charging, so I didn't have any choice in the matter. FWIW - I agree with installing updates automatically silently in the background because it solves a ton of issues for both developers and 99% of users.
